BENGAL HANDLOOMS HAND WOVEN HERITAGE :
Nestling in rural Bengal, amidst lush green paddy fields, punctuated by picturesque pukurs (ponds) are entire weaver villages engaged in creating the equivalent of poetry on fabric. Triumphing over the trauma of panel, weaver families which migrated to West Bengal in the 1950’s have helped keep alive a priceless heritage of highly stylized weaving techniques honed over generations. The handloom business in the eastern region has had its share of bumpy rides, but Bengal handlooms have survived the ups and downs to become a household name among connoisseurs of textiles.
DIFFERENT VARIETIES :
There are at least six varieties of Bengal handlooms, each deriving its name from the village in which it originated, and each with its own distinctive style. The undisputed queen of the range, however, is the magic Jamdani, which in all its myriad local avtars continues to retain its original grandeur and sophistication. The original version is referred to as Daccai jamdani, although it is now produced in Navdeep and Dhattigram, in West Bengal.
DACCAI JAMDANI :
Daccai Jamdani is distinguished from its distorted cousins by its very fine texture resembling muslin and the elaborate and ornate workmanship. In Bangladesh, weavers use fine Egyptian cotton, while the Indian weavers use only indigenous raw material. The single warp is usually ornamented with two extra weft followed by ground weft.

James Todd, the celebrated writer once wrote : "Rajasthan exhibits the sole example in the history of mankind of a people withstanding every outrage barbarity can inflict or human nature sustain, and bent to the earth, yet rising buoyant from the pressure and making calamity a whetstone to courage"
Today, long years after the last bugle was sounded, and after the warring kingdoms of erstwhile Rajputana, sheathed their swords, the desert appears romantic, its arts, the expression of a brave yet sensitive race, its architecture the embodiment of strength and grace. SAREE BLOUSE DESIGNS
SAREE BLOUSE DESIGNS - 2010 AND FESTIVAL SEASON SAREE AND SAREE BLOUSE DESIGNS OF INDIANS FROM AN ANALYTICAL PERSPECTIVE OF SAREE AND SAREE BLOUSE DESIGNS CATEGORIZATION<br />ANALYSIS AND REPORT BY OLGA LEDNICHENKO<br />ABSTRACT: 2010-karva-chauth has set the stage for the festive season for north Indian Hindus and the brides of those north Indian Hindus who may or may not be Hindu, or even Indian, like me.<br />I often wondered and struggled with the elaborate and intricate, relationships between Hindu festivals and Costumes and fashions, let alone customs. I initially thought, it was perhaps due to me being born outside India, but later on i realized that in India not only are the costumes and Saree and sari or Saree -blouses different and vary by religion, but also by geography and cultural clusters.<br />While i meandered through the Hindu Pantheon for many years, I noticed a pattern a design and a correlation between dress, language, geography and religion. The major axes - if you will - when it comes to lets say { and i will focus on saree and saree blouse designs, variations, motifs and patterns for now} costumes and attire - are:<br />[a] geographic variations: in Saree blouse and sari AND SAREE designs and motifs:<br />[b] Language, topography and religious dimensions <br />[c] Ethnicity and architectural variations related to the geographic centroids of one set of ethnicity moving into a particular geocenter.<br />for example: in karva-chauth and diwali - as a proxy - we can see - the following variations in saree and saree blouse designs, style or draping, color choices, fabrics, and /or IN NORTH INDIA - KARVA CHAUTH is celebrated and so is DIWALI while, in south its pongal and diwali is unheard of.. other than just taking the day off, because its a national holiday... <br />KEY WORDS:<br />SAREE BLOUSE DESIGNS, SAREE BLOUSE DESIGNS 2010, 2010 SAREE AND SAREE BLOUSE DESIGNS FROM KARVA CHAUTH, DIWLAI SAREE AND SAREE BLOUSE DESIGNS, DIWALI+FESTIVAL +SAREE-BLOUSE DESIGNS, KATRINA-KAIF-IMPACT ON SAREE BLOUSE DESIGNS, KATRINA KAIF LOOK ALIKE,<br /> <br />Having said that there are variations even within the north indian saree and saree blouse designs:

from western parts - which is dominated by BANDHEJ, BANDHAN, BANDHANI : styles : from RAJASTHAN AND FROM GUJARAT -> to : center of north indian india, such as UP, MP, etc - where the saree and saree blouse designs and forms are mostly dominated by two clusters and styles - ><br />[a] Benares - or banaras, or kashi style<br />[b] Lucknow or the awadh style -<br />If one moves to the 3rd segment of the north indian region to check out variations of saree and saree blouse designs, and correlated the colors and fabric choices of sarees with an eye toward comparsion and contrast - between Lucknow and UP style, olga UTSAV OR olya FESTIVAL SAREES : one notices the differences betwen bengali sarees and bengali saree blouse designs with that of benarsi sarees and rajasthani sarees and saree blouse designs.<br />One might wonder if the sample data from a temporal standpoint should be festival saree and saree blouses or lehenga choli to arrive at such classification and taxonomy of saree and saree blouse designs, patterns and variations or should another metric be used ?<br />I am not sure how to address that question, but to state that the diversity of india could be hidden in modern times and fused by mobility and integration plus by the non nucleation of the indian family: system ...<br />It is in festivals, hence, that the contrast is more obvious and less fusion, which makes the classification and clusterization of saree and saree blouse dimensions to be much more easy and vivid - and hence statistically significant, as clusterization and classification -would loose meaning and relevance if the number of clusters are as many as there are regions..<br />Hindu festivals are also a better gauge for the clusterization and classification of saree and saree blouse patterns designs and variations because of the following reasons:<br />[a] Hindus wear different styles and clothing in bridal season also, which very much coincides with karva chauth and diwali seasons. Indeed, starting today, ie KARVA CHAUTH 2010 -

Rajasthani sarees 2011
Rajasthani saris from Rajasthan such as bandhni or bandhej sarees are well known all over the world. Rajasthani sari is very comfortable during summer season. Different printing style are known to Rajasthani people akin to block print, leheriya print and bandhni print or tie & dye. Chiffon and georgette Rajasthani sarees are also developing their roots in the world market. Jaipur is the big sari centre in rajasthan so sometime it also known by the name of jaipur as jaipur sarees.
Rajasthan represents the ultimate confluence of history, chivalry, romance, rugged natural prettiness and colour. As Col. James Todd, the celebrated playwright once wrote : "Rajasthan exhibits the sole example in the history of mankind of a people withstanding every outrage barbarity can inflict or human nature sustain, and bent to the earth, yet rising buoyant from the pressure and making calamity a whetstone to courage"
Today, long years after the last trumpet was sounded, and after the military kingdoms of erstwhile Rajputana, sheathed their sword, the desert appears romantic, its arts, the expression of a brave yet sensitive race, its architecture the embodiment of strength and grace. It is as if, in celebration of life itself.
While an age has come to pass, cities flourish and contemporary Rajasthan is an explosion of colour and paegentry. It is the ultimate destination offering something to suit the tastes of every single different traveller.
The process of making bandhni clothes is basically the same in Gujarat and Rajasthan, though the pattern and design vary. The craftsmen from Rajasthan are easily recognizable because they grow the nail on their little finger to facilitate their lifting the cloth to tie it. On they wear a small metal ring with a point. The Gujarati craftsmen prefer to work without these aids. Bandhni sarees and dupattas are available at most shops all over India but to get the authentic material it is advisable to buy from the Rajasthan or Gujarat.

The fabric was predominantly used as sarees, the Kota doria is now a name given to sarees woven at Kaithun. Villages known to weave Kota Doria are mainly located in Rajasthan especially in Kota, Bundi and Baran districts of the state. However, the oldest and biggest concentration of weavers is in Kaithun, situated about 15 kms from Kota (the district headquarter).
