Bandhej or Bandhani is an art of tie and dye practiced mainly in the states of Rajasthan and Gujarat, India. Bandhej or Bandhni gets its name from the root word, 'baandh' meaning 'knot'. A plain piece of cloth, usually in cotton, muslin or silk, is tied with threads and dyed with various colors.
The process of creating a Bandhej fabric starts from dipping of cloth into a colour after which the cloth is folded to a quarter of its size. The fabric is first bleached, then folded and motifs are imprinted on it with a reddish dye called 'geru'. Then small knots are tied by hand to make up the motifs. The smaller the knots and the gaps between them, the more premium the finished product.
The colouring method involves the lightest shade being worked in first order, after which this is tied and a darker colour is introduced. An unlimited number of colour schemes are used. The designs are created with the combination of small dots and circles. Quality of bandhej can be judged by the size of the dots; the smaller the dots, finer is the quality. Red, maroon, yellow, golden and black are the common shades.

Kanchipuram a famous historical and mythological village 60 km from Madras, the capital of Tamilnadu is well-known for it's rich and traditional cotton, tamil sarees, and south silk sarees.
Kanchipuram has only been weaving Silk sarees for the past 150 years and specialises in a heavy silk sari woven with tightly twisted three-ply, high-denier threads using thick zari threads for supplementary - wrap and -- weft patterning. Interlocked-weft borders are common. Along with silk sarees, Kanchipuram also specialises in cotton and silk-polyster blended sarees with the demand of the current market.
Many of today's established Kanchipuram Silk weavers trained in the cultural centre of "Kalakshetra" during the 1970's producing sarees with designs that are some what 'heavy' in both style and fabric weight, with very wide bordes. Traditional motifs such as, mango, elephant, peacock, diamond, lotus, pot, creeper, flower, parrot, hen, and depiction of stories from mythology are very common in Kanchipuram sarees. Cotton sarees are ornamented with threads and some silk sarees are also woven with thread instead of pure zari.
Silk and cotton is sourced from Bangalore and Surat is the only place where zari is brought. The recent development in the designing field shows the introduction of computerised Jacquard borders in Kanchipuram silk saris. Though the techniques and the materials are changing with the marketdemand; the motifs are still conventional and traditional in order to hold the custom and tradition of a Kanchipuram saree.

Chikankari is a fine and intricate shadow-work type of embroidery done by white yarn on colourless muslins called tanzeb (tan meaning body and zeb meaning decoration). The word ‘chikan’ according to one school of thought appears to have had its origin in Persia, being derivative of chakin or chakeen. The earliest reference in literature to chikan dates back to the 3rd century B.C. In his records Megasthenes, a Greek traveller, had mentioned the use of flowered muslins by the Indians.
Stitches :
Stitching on chikan saris are great and can be divided into three categories: Flat stitches, which are delicate and subtle and lie close to the surface of the fabric giving it a distinctive textural appearance; Embossed stitches which are highlighted from the fabric surface lending it a characteristic grainy texture and Jali work which is the most striking feature of chikan embroidery and which creates a delicate net effect. The fabric is broken into holes by ‘teasing’ the warp and weft yarns and holding them in position by small stitches.

The discovery of a dyed cotton fabric dating back to the Indus Valley civilization shows that the art of dyeing with the use of mordants was well
known to the Indian dyers 5,000 years ago. This form of dyeing was responsible for making India famous all over the world for its dyed and printed fabrics. Printed fabrics have also been found in Fostat, the old Cairo City. Recent excavations of Red Sea ports have also brought out a greater range of printed textile. These date back to 800 A.D. There technique and design point to western Indian origin. Indian dyers had mastered the art of dyeing with fast colors from ancient times whereas in Europe this was unknown. Indian dyers were considered magicians by travelers, who saw them putting a white cloth into a pale liquid of indigo dye and when the cloth appeared from the dye bath it was still white. It was only when it came into contact with oxygen and it became blue. Multiple immersions and exposure to the air enriched the color. People felt this was a magical transformation. Printed fabrics were in common use throughout North India, as well as for home use. They also became important export items.

Printed Sarees Fashion Trends

A number of printing technique have been developed in different centers. They are direct printing, resist printing, and screen printing. In certain cases, the cloth is painted by using by using a pen with dyes and mordants. This method is known as kalamkari, a pen work. In others, the techniques of printing and kalamkari are combined by printing the outline of the design and filling in the details with a kalam, a pen.
Direct printing is practised all over India where a bleached cotton or silk fabric is printed with the help of carved wooden blocks.
The batik technique is a development from this form of resist printing. Here the fabric is painted with molten wax and then dye in cold dyes after which the cloth is washed inhot water. This results in the melting of the wax and emergence of the patterns cloth. The effect of the resist technique in printing is soft and subdued and the outlines are not so clearly defined in the case of the painted batik.
The important centers for hand printing in Rajasthan are Jaipur, Sanganer, Bagroo, Pali and Barmer and many others. In Gujarat state, Mandvi, Dhamadka, Mundra, Anjar, Jamanagar and Surendernagar, Jaitpur, Ahmedabad, Vadodara and deesa are important centers of printing. In Kuch, printing on silk and cotton was perfected a long time ago.
